"To call every occurrence a stereotype is to shut down conversations about it altogether. " Perfect - a perennial point of far from settled debate. Queer authors are allowed to write imperfect characters in their own (or any) demographic.
I know my reading this is long overdue but I'm so glad I finally did. 100% agree with everything you said, and I'd be interested to see your take on sexualization as well. There was less room for "fetishization" or "horniness" because as the story progressed it only left room for discomfort and. disgust, and I think there's this ingrained idea that mlm and wlw stories need to leave an adequate amount of room for sexualizing sexuality. I haven't read all the comments on goodreads, but, at least for me, it feels like that might have subconsciously contributed to the lesophobic declarations too, even from people who are lesbians. Just a thought :)
so well put... as usual :) the queer experience, especially lesbianism, is extremely alienating and can be traumatizing for some. what's so beautiful about horror is there's a vulnerability to it that you can't find anywhere else that helps us explain the darkest parts of our lives. it seems that eric larocca has really been able to tap into that. loved reading this!!!
